Aside from La Traviata and II Trovatore, Rigoletto is the most frequently performed piece by G. Verdi on the repertoire of the Serbian National Theatre. The eighth staging of Rigoletto, directed by Voja Soldatovic, had opened the 143rd theatrical season on 27th September 2003. Verdi found the topic for the opera Rigoletto in Victor Hugo's drama The King's Fool which F. M. Piave adapted into an opera libretto. The main character of this touching story is a freak, hunch-back and court jester, but also a caring and unfortunate father whose daughter fell victim to a fatal accident. Despite his physical deformity, Rigoletto is the most humane character in Verdi's operas. The story depicted in an extraordinary musical language owes its constant success not only to the main character's stirring arias, but also to a plentitude of melodies and arias which have become a staple of even concert stages repertoire. After more than fifteen years, the Serbian National Theatre presented itself abroad with the opera Rigoletto in a full hall of the Theatre Debussy at the Festival palace in Cannes, before an audience that greeted the Novi Sad Opera ensemble with standing ovations which lasted for several minutes.
