Held on 1st December 1994, the first Serbian National Theatre premiere of the international ballet spectacle Zorba the Greek, composed by Mikis Theodorakis in the spirit of the classical Greek tragedy, was greeted by the audience's standing ovations unheard of on our stages. Mikis Theodorakis's personal appearance made the premiere even more significant especially because of the fact that he used the opportunity to donate his copyrights for this production to the Serbian National Theatre. With undiminished success and the same dance energy this ballet has been running for fourteen years.
"It is a story about subdued passions and their explosions, about pure emotions, about yearning for a full life crushed by patriarchal morals and customs. With brilliant, smooth, clear and plastic dance language, drawing his inspiration from the traditional Greek sirtaki dance as well as the classical and neo-classical ballet heritage, the choreographer, with his distinctive style of a profuse artistic vocation, tells the story of Zorba through numerous solo, duet and ensemble dance parts, creating an enthralling, metaphorical, highly expressive stage structure with an exuberant aesthetic charge."
